The story

When a series of murders targets London's apothecaries in 1665, fourteen-year-old apprentice Christopher Rowe discovers his beloved master is the latest victim, leaving behind a coded message and a burden of dangerous knowledge. With his loyal friend Tom, Christopher must decipher clues, navigate treacherous Guild politics, and stay one step ahead of a cunning enemy who will stop at nothing to claim a powerful secret formula.

Age verdict

Best for ages 10-13, with the torture scene and emotional weight of grief making this more suited to mature middle-graders than younger readers despite the accessible Lexile level.

✓ Perfect for

  • Readers who love puzzles
